Cub Scout Camp-Out

Saturday, 16 May, 2009

campingThis years cub scout camp out for our pack was supposed to be tonight, but 5 inches of rain yesterday is putting a serious damper on those plans. I have already decided that spending the night in a tent tonight is out of the question. It’s supposed to get down to 40 degrees tonight and I’d rather stay indoors. I know, I’m a wimp. I prefer to say that I have an above average common sense ratio. They will still be having the raingutter regatta and a couple more activities, so I told the boys to get dressed in “play” clothes to get muddy. We’ll spend a couple hours out there this afternoon. I’m hoping the sun comes out for a while.

There is another camp-out scheduled at the Peoria Chiefs baseball field, but that is on a weekend that they are at their mom’s house. I would love to ask her to change weekends so we could go, but I’m not sure if I should since we are only starting this every other weekend schedule this weekend. I’ve still got a week before I have to order the tickets, maybe I’ll run it by Brandy to see what she says.

Cub Scouting Fun and Misc

Tuesday, 28 April, 2009

So the last couple days have been pretty good with Parker and Casey. Last night we had a Cub Scout meeting where they got to earn their Science belt loop. One of the other parents is a 3rd grade teacher and her favorite subject is science. She led the scouts in performing an experiment. They learned how to lift another scout into the air using their breath. They got a long “Windbag” and lay it on the floor. Their partner then lay on it while they blew into it. Eventually, the had enough air in there that their partner was lifter off the ground. They thought it was pretty cool.

Tonight, the boys were in such a good mood that I just wanted play with them all night. Instead, after dinner we played with the windbags from last night then watched a movie. “Hotel for Dogs” was a very nice family movie. The boys couldn’t keep from laughing at the many personalities of all the dogs. Friday was kinda the leader of all the dogs. I think he was their favorite.

I might just sleep tonight with the vision of the smiles they had tonight running through my head.

Stepson Connection

Thursday, 22 February, 2007

Last night, I felt a connection with my stepson. I’ve been his stepdad for over 5 years now, but I’ve never been anything more to him other than Jay Jay (when he was younger) or Jason as of late. Anyway, last week I took him to his cub scout meeting and we made a little tool box together. I didn’t think much of it other than I felt we worked well together and it stayed in one piece (which was touch and go for a while). Fast forward to last nights Scout Banquet, in particular, the show and share portion. He took this toolbox for the show and share, but when he was telling everyone there about it, he said: “I made this toolbox with my stepdad at our last meeting.” It wasn’t much, but I felt a connection with him that wasn’t there before. It’s been no secret that I’ve struggled to find my way in the step-dad role, so that little statement by him meant so much to me. I spoke to him later that night about how proud I was that we were able to make that together.
